January is National Blood Donor Month. The Blood Bank of Delmarva will be taking over the Ocean City Convention Center (40th Street and Coastal Highway) on from now until January 25th. From 9 am – 5 pm on Wednesday, those interested can find out if they are able to, and capable of, donating blood.

The theme for this year’s drive is ‘OC Saves!’. Thousands of lives are saved by blood donors each and every year and would not be possible without the support of thoughtful donors. Even if it hurts just a little, giving blood is fast, easy, and safe.

“While we sincerely hope that our donors know how much we appreciate them all year long, National Blood Donor Month allows us to more formally thank those who give blood and save lives,” said Roy Roper, President and CEO of Blood Bank of Delmarva in a recent press release regarding the event.

Established in 1999, the Ocean City Beach Blanket Blood Drive is a way to promote blood donation during the winter months when blood supplies are usually decreased due seasonal ailments. Colds, the flu, inclement weather, and the holidays tend to keep blood donors at bay during a season when blood donations are needed frequently.

The 2011 blood drive had more than 650 registered donors in attendance and resulted in more than 550 pints of blood collected. The organizers of the event hope to see even more Eastern Shore residents participating. The Blood Bank will distribute all donations to 16 hospitals across Delmarva. To sweeten the cause, all who register and donate during the two-day event will receive a t-shirt and be offered a variety of cookies, candy, donuts, and snacks.

Anyone who is 17 years of age or older, weighs at least 110 pounds, is in general good health, and meets all eligibility requirements may give blood. If a donor is eligible to give blood, the may donate every 56 days. All donors must provide a photo ID and two other forms of identification.

Giving blood takes about 5 – 7 minutes. The donation process is a little longer and includes a blood pressure, temperature, and pulse reading, medical history review, and post-donation refreshments.  The entire appointment takes about one hour, while the aftereffect could positively influence someone’s life forever.
