According to Merriam-Webster, junk food is defined as “food that is not good for your health because it contains high amounts of fat or sugar.” Well, here at Shorebread, our definition is a little different: delicious. So, in honor of today, July 21st, being National Junk Food Day, we’d like to share our favorite places to obtain some of this deliciousness in Ocean City, MD.

Thrasher’s French Fries

In fact, just typing that made us start to salivate. The golden-brown morsels are fried to perfection and we just can’t resist dousing them in malt vinegar (is there any other way to eat them?!). Thrasher’s French Fries are an Ocean City staple and visitors literally plan their trips to the beach around getting their hands on a giant bucket of this goodness. For the record, we strongly support adding “french fries” as their own food group.

Dumser’s Dairyland

One of our favorite summertime activities is grabbing a cone at Dumser’s Dairyland on 49th street, sitting on their front deck, and watching the cars and people pass by. Their ice cream is made fresh daily, right there on premises, and you can absolutely taste that freshness in the ice cream. Our personal favorite: black raspberry!

The Fractured Prune

Let’s see here: warm, freshly made doughnuts, covered in a sugary glaze, then topped with delicious decorations such as chocolate chips, sprinkles, and cookie crumbs. We’ve tried our fair share of their custom concoctions and have yet to be disappointed. Fractured Prune Doughnuts are essentially the breakfast of champions.

Dolle’s

Fudge, caramels, and taffy, oh my! Has anyone ever walked into one of the Dolle’s shops and not made a purchase? We sure can’t. One whiff of this store and we just have to buy an unnecessary amount of goodies. Also, when you buy two pounds of fudge, the third is free, and it’s no secret that we’re a sucker for a good deal. Free fudge? Yes, please!

Fisher’s Popcorn

Fisher’s Popcorn has been located in Ocean City since 1937 and we think it’s a fair assessment to say that they have perfected their recipe for caramel popcorn over these last almost 80 years. Also, let’s not forget to give credit where credit is due: their white cheddar and Old Bay popcorns are just as amazing as their classic caramel popcorn. Don’t leave us unsupervised with a bucket of any of these popcorns. Don’t say we didn’t warn you.

BAKED

Located just outside of Ocean City, MD in Berlin, MD, BAKED is baking up some of the best baked goods we’ve ever laid eyes on. Their cupcake bread pudding (topped with a warm caramel sauce) is to die for. Yes, you read that right; instead of stale bread, they make bread pudding with cupcakes!

Alright Shorebread readers, the choice is yours. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to seek out some of this deliciousness for yourself today, National Junk Food Day. Don’t forget to share your favorites with us!
