If you have ever traveled west on route 50 through Trappe, Maryland, as ShoreBread has, then you have most likely seen the funky and colorful log cabin that is Tammy’s Cool Things. Whether you are doing some last minute holiday shopping, need a present for that person who has everything, or you’re simply sick of fighting the crowds at the mall, Tammy’s Cool Things has an unique array of gift ideas this holiday season.
Owner Tammy Saunders first opened her store five years ago and moved to the current Trappe location in 2011. Here, Tammy offers a mix of eccentric items for the “home and body,” such as “as tapestries, candles, incense, clothes, and some food products” as Saunders told us. The store’s merchandise would appeal to any flowerchild or Dead Head, in fact they’re Facebook profile picture is the Grateful Dead’s Dancing Bears. However, you don’t have to be a retro-fan to shop at Tammy’s Cool Things. As long as you enjoy gifts that are hard to come by, you’ll find something perfect for you.
Saunders first got the idea to open her eclectic shop when she moved from Dallas, Texas to the Eastern Shore. Here, she said she noticed a “lack places for people under 50 years old to shop.” Saunders noted that“Dallas had tons of stores to buy offbeat cool clothes and things… but here there was a real hole in the market.”
After some thought and consideration, Saunders opened her shop, bringing a groovy vibe to the local community. Saunders store mixes the funky Dallas stylings with the small town attitude of the Shore by accommodating her customers as best she can. Saunders explained that she makes sure to “cater to customers, if there is something that they need but we don’t have, we’ll find it for them.” Tammy’s Cool Things will also stay open later hours depending on the needs of those shopping. “If you come in a little late, we’ll stay open for you” Saunders said.
Tammy’s Cool Things is also currently in the middle of their 12 Days of Christmas Sale which features reduced prices on many items including 50% off denim and scarves. Also if there is an item you want to buy that is not on sale, shoppers can bring in canned goods to and receive a separate discount.
With Christmas fast approaching and our gift lists still needs completing, we will definitely be making a stop at Tammy’s Cool Things to pick up a few unique gifts as we continue our travels across the Eastern Shore.
