February is a short month, but that doesn’t mean that it isn’t full of fun events and happenings. Beyond Valentine’s Day, President’s Day Weekend and the exciting return of many of our favorite restaurants and local businesses, there are also a number of local events to consider…so many in fact that we decided to focus solely on Pocomoke and Snow Hill. We admittedly give a lot of attention to Berlin (a.k.a #mdscoolestsmalltown), but that doesn’t mean we don’t enjoy making the drive to the southern end of Worcester County as often as possible. Snow Hill and Pocomoke pack charm, scenery, local cuisine and shopping, not to mention parks, museums and locally-minded events. There are plenty of things to do this month, so why not get started…

The Town of Snow Hill is kicking off the month of February with a new season of First Fridays in Snow Hill. Head to downtown Snow Hill on Friday, February 7 and discover special promotions at local galleries, shops and restaurants from 5pm to 8pm. Snow Hill has two new stores to explore, The Corner Shoppe and The Green Doors. Bishop’s Stock Fine Art, Craft and Wine will be featuring its Winter Abstracts 2014 show with wine for the tasting from Spain. For dinner and live entertainment, there’s The Blue Dog featuring Todd Crosby and the WW Tunes, while the Harvest Moon Tavern hosts Opposite Directions from 7pm to 10pm.

The Mar-Va Theater is set to celebrate Valentine’s Day in style, with a three-course dinner by Johnny Mo of Mallard’s. In addition, each course will be paired with a fine wine as well as live cabaret. Limited seating is available and tickets are $115 per couple for members and $125 per couple for non-members. The following day, bring the whole family to the Delmarva Discovery Center for Reptile Festival 2014. This year’s festival features Brian Kristal and his reptiles from Reptile Wonders – The Nature Center on the Go. See and learn about snapping turtles, spurred tortoises, bearded dragons, monitor lizards, corn snakes, kingsnakes boa constrictors and more. Shows will be held at 1pm and 3pm. Also enjoy reptile crafts, games and face painting. Later that evening, join the Pocomoke Boat Docking Association for the Hi Tied Gala, to be held at the Elks Lodge. The event is a fundraiser for the 2nd Annual Boat Docking Challenge that is set to take place in August 2014. The event is formal/semi-formal and will include dinner, live and silent auctions, and live music from Virginia Beach’s top dance band, Hotcakes.

On Saturday, February 15, enjoy an afternoon at Pocomoke River State Park for the Owl Prowl at the State Park. The owl prowl includes a hike in the woods at dusk to listen for hoots, wails and shrieks of owls. Learn what makes owls excellent night hunters and learn how they are a vital part of our environment. Be sure to wear warm, comfortable clothes as this is a completely outdoor event. Admission fee is $3 per person.

Be sure to mark your calendars for the end of the month, as the Snow Hill Area Chamber of Commerce hosts the Third Annual Oyster Roast on Sunday February 23rdfrom 1pm until 5pm. The celebration of all things oysters will occur at the Old Firehouse on Green Street. Simply nab yourself a wristband and enjoy this all-you-can-eat event. Oyster stew, oyster casino, oyster Rockefeller, Malibu oyster, single fried oysters and roasted oysters are just a few of the oyster delicacies you’ll be devouring.
