The Worcester County Humane Society (WCHS) is in the spotlight yet again! Another successful fundraiser is in the books thanks to the local friends of the WCHS, Peppers of West Ocean City and the beloved Burley Oak crew. A few weeks ago we joined local supporters, family and friends for the fundraiser held in the name of the WCHS on one of Burley Oak’s famous Monday night charity events. Amongst Burley Oaks normal bar crew, Peppers West sent two guest bartenders, Amy Rockelli and Zach Hall, who volunteered their time for the event.
The WCHS reported the success of the event this week (not that the large and generous crowd wasnt’t already indicative of a great turnout). Overall, $799 was raised from the raffle drawing sales, auction items and donations. In addition, $233 was donated from the bar ring (Burley Oak donated 10 percent of the bar ring) and the tips donated from the guest bartenders. As a no-kill shelter, the WCHS relies solely on their fundraisers and community donations to operate year-round.
Well-known local reggae musician Kaleb Brown and the Kaleb Brown Band also volunteered their time and creativity to the cause, performing live for everyone’s enjoyment. Shelter Director Linda Lugo and Committee member and volunteer Sandy Summers even purchased pizza for everyone who attended. Committee member and volunteer, Sandi Smith was very pleased with the outcome, telling us, “the ways and means committee is currently working on several fundraisers, the next being April’s Board Walkin’ for Pet’s, and of course we are always open and searching for fundraisers with businesses such as Burley Oak.” Humane Society Secretary, Kelly Austin also commented, “I am very pleased with the outcome and appreciate the community coming out to support our animals.”
The Worcester County Humane Society is always accepting donations whether it be money or time. You can stop by and visit the WCHS Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday & Saturday, 11am – 3pm. They are located at 12330 Eagles Nest Rd. Berlin, MD 21842. And of course, we hope to see you all at Boardwalkin’ for Pets in Ocean City April 26.
