When you walk into a business for an interview and you’re met with an immediate sense of calm, you know you’re in the right place. Touting a motto of ‘wellness within,’ we were eager to take a timeout from our busy day to relax, take in the sweet scents of the local apothecary, and talk holistic well-being with local massage therapist and esthetician, Terri Street.

“I wanted to give that personal, no-stress care…and to teach people how to really take care of themselves,” Street said of her decision to launch her own business eight years ago. After working as a licensed massage therapist and esthetician in the local spa world, Street decided to branch out on her own. Her first step was setting up shop behind the Atlantic Hotel, offering services to hotel guests and locals. It wasn’t long (eight months in fact) before Street had her heart set on the perfect location, a small space just down the road on Broad Street in Berlin. “I just love how perfect the timing was for this spot. It was all about timing.” A year later, Street expanded further by bringing Jami Citrano on board. A graduate of the Muscular Therapy Institute in Cambridge, Citrano combines a scientific background with traditional, holistic methods to help her clients achieve their goals in rehabilitation, motivation, and relaxation. “She is extremely talented holistically and medically,” said Street of Citrano. “She is probably one of the best in the area.”

Together Citrano and Street offer a wide range of treatments, including Swedish massage, deep tissue massage, oncology, foot reflexology, prenatal and sports massage therapy, myofascial release, injury assessment, hot stone, reiki, and firecupping. Facials and waxing are also available, as are couples massages and customized packages. “We’re very customized with what we offer because everybody is different,” explained Street. “We want to give them the experience that they deserve.” Providing top-quality, customized services have proven successful for Atlantic Retreat, which boasts a strong following of locals. Street was quick to pay homage to her loyal following, but also the strong community in Berlin. “We all work together. It’s a beautiful attribute for people here. We truly do care as a community and that’s what is so unique about Berlin.”

In addition to a passion for massage therapy and holistic life, Street has a longstanding love of skin and skincare, which is what spurred her to learn as much as possible about aromatherapy and apothecary. Street is currently in her last year of study to become a clinical aromatherapist and has spent years researching products and talking with experts in the field. “It’s just as important to know what you’re putting on topically as it is to know what you’re ingesting. It truly is a passion for me, my apothecary that I started,” explained Street. After careful research and testing, Street has a line of skin products available, which includes facial serums, body oils, salts, salves, and spritzers. Street uses organic as much as possible (some oils she explained, simply aren’t available yet as certified organic). Currently, the skin serum is the number one seller, followed closely by the salve. “I want to train and educate people how to really use aromatherapy safely and effectively,” she said. A more recent addition to her line is the Baby Gold Collection, made specifically for babies sensitive, soft skin. Street also makes custom orders for clients looking for help with anything from specific skin issues to anxiety. “I love it, it’s so creative for me. Especially the custom orders. I just love it.”

For Street, what truly sets Atlantic Retreat apart is the calming vibe that permeates her space. “Anyone’s first impression is typically that ‘ahhhh’ moment. By the time they leave, they have that healthy glow going,” she said. The personal touch and the personal care are the foundation of the business, continued Street, an attribute that has been fulfilling for her professionally as well. “It’s been a great journey for me. This field has changed my life.”
