When we spoke to Angela Houck, owner of Pure Power Studio, she informed us that there is a negative stigma about Pole Fitness that people have created because it can have some negative connotations. Houck said if people would move past that stigma and educate themselves about Pole fitness, there would be many more women attending this class — so we decided to give it a go!

Let us tell you, Pure Pole was the most enjoyable workout we’ve ever had — and you still break a sweat! Pure Pole invites all women to try out this unique fitness strategy, all ages, shapes and sizes attend regularly so don’t feel like you are not capable, because you are! You won’t be able to get this workout anywhere else. The experience itself brought out some femininity and confidence which made working out that more enjoyable. The pink and purple decorations and the dim lighting makes it a fun experience compared to the vibe you get from your regular gym. Be sure to wear shorts, though, otherwise you will struggle with your grip.

The instructor starts with a warm up by stretching, and including exercises such as squats, calf raises, push ups, sit ups and hip movement moving to the rhythm of the music. This will give you an intense, full body workout leaving you sore the next day. After the warm up, we started to practice moves using the pole. (Note: do not put any lotion on before class, otherwise you will not be able to get a grip and we definitely experienced this issue). The moves we practiced were eventually put together to create a dance at the end of the class.

Pure Pole requires an insane amount of upper body strength, but do not let this discourage you from attending. Believe us when we say you will genuinely enjoy it. You are able to move at your own pace which is great if you are a beginner, because we were way less skilled for a first-timer. The energy from the instructor and the encouragement of your peers motivates you to try harder. Trying something different and stepping out of your comfort zone makes getting fit so much more enjoyable because it’s not the same workout every single day. So we encourage you to attend this class, as scary as it sounds, you will not regret it and you’ll want to go back for more.
