One of the more favorable aspects of the lessening heat is the chance to get outside and play a few rounds of golf without completely melting in the oppressive summer sun. September and October are ideal months for hitting the local golf courses. The only thing greater than a round of golf on a beautiful afternoon is a round of golf benefiting local charities and causes. Over the next few weeks, there are ample opportunities to swing for a cause, so sign up, get involved, and enjoy a little golf while you’re at it. Here’s a sampling of a few of the local tournaments in our area:

Tuesday, September 17 – 98.1 Bulldog Tournament

Golfers will gather Tuesday at Lighthouse Sound to play in the Bulldog Tourney benefitting the Ocean98 Scholarship fund. The event promises great prizes, a day of golf and fun. Contact golf@irieradio.com for more information.

Wednesday, September 18 – 1st Annual Summer Crush Golf Classic

This Wednesday, at Deer Run Golf Club in Berlin, the Society of Women Leaders Lower Shore will host the First Annual Summer Crush Golf Classic to benefit the Local American Red Cross Disaster Relief Victims and to help funding for High School Jr. Red Cross Club’s CPR/AED and First-Aid Training. Registration is $100 per player and includes continental breakfast, lunch, cart, tee gift, range balls, and 1 mulligan per player. Prizes will be given out for teams and players, along with a Hole-In-One prize package, silent and live auctions, a cash raffle $500 prize and a putting and longest ball contest. The day will also include a ‘win a car in a hole-in-one’ competition donated by Courtesy Chevrolet. Ladies and mixed teams are welcome. Thursday, September 26 – 20th Annual Fall Golf Classic

Join Atlantic General Hospital for their 20th Annual Fall Golf Classic benefitting the hospital’s foundation. Foursome entries are $1000 and includes green fees, cart, lunch, dinner, beverages on the course and gifts. Lunch is served at 11am, with a shotgun start to follow at 1pm. A long drive contest will be held, along with a closest to the pin contest and a putting contest. Hole-in-one prizes, a 50/50 raffle and other prizes will be awarded. Wednesday, October 2 – Art Davis Memorial Golf Tournament

Friday October 4th & Saturday, October 5th – Flamingo Cup

Since 1963 the Flamingo Motel has grown from one building with 23 units to three buildings and a total of 112 units. Along the way, the Flamingo owners and staff have made friendships to last a lifetime. The Flamingo Motel family invites you to celebrate 50 years of business with them at the Flamingo Cup. Wednesday, October 9th – 3rd Annual Amber Clifford Ramsey Tournament

Events begin at noon at the Ocean City Golf Course for the 3rd Annual Amber Clifford Golf Tournament to benefit the Believe in Tomorrow Children’s Foundation and the VFW charitable programs.

Wednesday October 9 & Thursday, October 10 – 2013 Ocean City Pro-Am and Saltwater Open

Ocean City Pro-Am welcomes Dirk Shultz, MAPGA Champion; Bobby Ashton MAPGA Senior Champion; and Ashley Grier, MAPGA Women’s Champion to the beach for the ProAm and Saltwater Open. Events will take place at two of the area’s championship courses – Lighthouse Sound and Bayside Resort. Both days of golf begin at 11am. Teams will consist of three amateurs and one professional. Golf pros will stay free courtesy of the Fenwick Inn. Stick around Wednesday for the players’ reception party and day one awards at Seacrets, from 7pm til….Happy Hour will run all night long with 50 percent off of dinners and appetizers.

Friday, October 11 – Salisbury University Homecoming Golf Tournament

Wednesday, October 16 – 8th Annual USFOCAP Golf Tournament

The 8th Annual USFOCAP Golf Tourney will be held October 11 at the Ocean City Golf Club, benefitting wounded troops from Iraq and Afghanistan wars and supporting the 115th Military Police Battalion of Salisbury. Friday, October 18th – 17th Annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic

Join the local EWGA for the 17th Annual Pink Ribbon Golf Tournament . The event kicks off at 1pm at the Ocean City Golf Club. Entrance is $100 per person and includes golf, lunch and dinner, tournament gift bag, great contests and prizes. 50/50 raffle, Chinese auction and more will occur throughout the day. Saturday, October 26 – Swing for Youth Golf Open

Help raise funds for the Ocean City Parks and Recreation youth programs by signing up for the Swing for Youth Golf Open at Eagles Landing. Entry is $125 per person and includes golf, a $20 gift certificate to the pro shop, sleeve of Titleist ProV1 balls, contests, breakfast buffet, soup and hotdogs and post-event BBQ, raffle tickets and mulligans.
