Former Olympian Dominique Dawes, who won medals in three Olympic games—the only American gymnast to do so—will be speaking at James M. Bennett High School in Salisbury, MD at the Health Fair Saturday, March 31st.
Dawes made her debut in the 1992 Barcelona Games and earned a team bronze medal. In the 1996 games, as part of the “Magnificent Seven” team, Dawes won a team gold medal and an individual bronze for her floor routine, becoming the first African-American gymnast to win an individual medal. She made a comeback in the 2000 Sydney Games. Her team was later awarded a bronze medal.
Following her days as an Olympic athlete, Dawes became a motivational speaker, gymnastics coach, media analyst, health advocate, and acted as the co-chair for the President’s Council for Fitness Sports and Nutrition.
As the featured speaker at the Health Fair, Dawes will inspire the crowd with her accomplishments and stories and motivate those in attendance to take a positive approach toward their own health. The first 200 people in the gymnasium will be invited to attend a one-hour photo and autograph session following the presentation.
The Health Fair is jointly sponsored by Peninsula Regional Medical Center and the Wicomico County Board of Education. Activities include a rock climbing wall and obstacle course, cooking and exercise demonstrations, and a kids corner and fun walk. Also on hand will be the da Vinci Surgical Robot Exhibit. Peninsula Regional Medical Center was the first facility on the Delmarva Peninsula to offer its patients the benefits of the da Vinci S High Definition (HD) Surgical System robot—the most advanced robotic system available, assisting in minimally invasive procedures. The system is currently used by urology surgeons in prostate surgery, cardiothoracic surgeons for coronary artery bypass surgery, and GYN oncology surgeons for hysterectomies.
Over 30 free screenings including balance testing, lymphedema management, bone density, depression & anxiety screening, foot screening, oral screening, vision and hearing testing, stroke assessment, oxygen saturation testing, diabetes risk assessment, height and weight stations for adults and children, waist measurement, body fat and blood pressure readings, will be offered to those who attend, among others.
