The Heart of a Runner: Local Woman Paces the Baltimore Marathon

October 10, 2012 | by Andrea Bowland – Founding Editor

About ten miles in your legs start to go. They are still there of course—pumping, pushing you further, locked into a physical autopilot mode of sorts, down the winding course with no end in sight—but you no longer feel them. The next 16.2 miles, or actually further—unless you happen to cut every turn precisely—become a mental game. It’s no longer the question whether you can physically endure the race; it’s whether or not you are mentally strong enough to do so. From this point forward, aside from one’s own cerebral fortitude, the driving force towards completion in a marathon can come from an unlikely place—or rather, a person, in what is often a singular sport. Lightning by Chris Maust - Ocean City, MD

Every winter, the only thing I look forward to (other than not being cold and miserable), is those fleeting few days in April and May when the weather isn’t quite hot enough to make you want to run into the nearest 7-11 and jump in an ice cooler, but not so cold you contemplate lighting your clothes on fire just to stay warm; there’s a wonderful meeting place somewhere between the two. Besides the unspeakably awesome temperature outside, the best thing about this time of year is the epic thunderstorms that come rolling in at around 3PM, ominously dark blotches in an otherwise pristine sky. There is nothing more enjoyable during these times than sitting around and just admiring the storms for what they are: awe inspiring powerhouses of nature. This spring however, I was brutally and mercilessly robbed of any such show. Oh, how bummed I was. [Read more]

Big names are soon to make the trip to Ocean City, MD. Susan Sarandon, Amy Sedaris, John Hannah—a trifecta of star power and talent, these actors are all part of the soon-to-begin shooting film, Ping Pong Summer. But these well-known actors are actually stepping in as the supporting cast. The lead roles are all to be played by teenagers, and most are from Maryland. A 16-year-old Ocean City local is reported to be playing Stacy, the female lead. [Read more]
Bona Style - Perfect Pairs -Melissa Bona

Some of the things that I am loving right now in fashion are the unexpected ways people are pairing colors, textures and even patterns. Now more then ever anything goes and it makes it easier on your bank account when you can take what you already own and add a new twist to it! The easiest way to pair things together is mixing colors that are not typical, like mint and tangerine or yellow and pink. [Read more]
Diakonia West Ocean City MD

November 30, 2012 | by Andrea Bowland – Founding Editor

Just off the busy artery of Golf Course Road in West Ocean City, MD—which leads to waterfront restaurants, marinas, and million dollar homes in many directions—sits what appears to be a white two-story single-family home. Go back the gravel driveway and you see it’s actually a main house plus cottages, and within those walls 32 people currently reside – men, women, and children, most from Worcester County. But this isn’t an apartment complex, and it’s not a traditional ‘home’ for those living here. It’s transitional housing, a strong sense of community, and a way forward for those fallen under hardship, provided by the charitable organization,Diakonia. [Read more]

Shorebilly's Swill - Syd Nichols

This week I may bounce around a little bit, just to give you a heads up. It should come as no surprise though since the style and format of my writing is normally about as structurally sound as a third world mud hut during hurricane season. That combined with my ADD and the fact that I’m juggling 2 babies while writing this may explain why I wander a bit with my stories. I actually have the rare gift of both ADD and OCD. This essentially means that I can’t focus for very long on what I’m obsessing about, so it’s constantly changing. I’m like a mentally deficient bowl of alphabet soup.  Unfortunately, the only medication I take for this is made from potatoes and distilled in Holland. Ahhh. I feel better already. Now what were we talking about? [Read more]

EVO Public House - Salisbury MD

April 9, 2012 by Amanda Buckley – Columnist

An abandoned ice factory may seem like an unsuspecting venue for the newest restaurant in Salisbury.  However, the large open space and industrial feel of exposed brick and ductwork, pair perfectly with the great food and craft brews that lie within.  Evolution Craft Brewing Company has finally opened the doors to its new gastropub, The Public House. November 8, 2012 | Andrea Bowland – Founding Editor

All throughout the day Monday, October 29th, residents of the Ocean City, MDarea sat glued to their computers, TV’s, radios, or smart phones—whatever bit of technology they could rely on for information about the storm of epic proportions bearing down on the Eastern Shore. Beginning with the morning high tide cycle, the system dubbed the Storm of the Century, Frankenstorm, or simply Hurricane Sandy, had already caused epic waves and extreme flooding. Downtown Ocean City south of 17th Street had been evacuated, reports circulated that Route 1, the coastal road north, was closed, and areas all over the Delmarva Peninsula, including Fenwick Island, DE and Salisbury, MD were reporting severe flooding.
