Here on the Eastern Shore, we were lucky enough to avert the large amounts of snow and ice that hit other parts of the state this week. Although a layer of powder would have transformed our home towns into a winter wonderland, the lack of snowfall allows us to easily travel all over the Eastern Shore and enjoy the local holiday events going on this weekend. Whether you have family to entertain or want an excuse for a day trip, ShoreBread has a lineup of fun activities for all ages.

If you missed out on Poplar Hill Mansion’s Yuletide Open House last week, you can still tour the historic home that is completely decked out for Christmas. Poplar Hill is a Federal-style mansion that proudly holds the title of the oldest house in Salisbury. For Tea With Santa, bring your little ones to enjoy peppermint tea, sweets and a chance to sit and speak with Jolly Old Saint Nick. While inside the home, take a look around to get an idea or what life was like before modern day luxuries like electricity and modern heating.

Onancock Christmas Homes Tour and Music Festival

On the Virginia side of the Shore in Onancock, there is a special holiday celebration happening that you certainly don’t want to miss! Starting at 2pm Saturday, visitors can tour six historic residences as well as the new Onancock Harbormaster’s building. While you are roaming around discovering the seaside town, music will be floating through the streets from Historic Cokesbury Church. Some of the homes you can anticipate include, a Queen Anne-style Victorian apartment, a Federal-style house (now home to one of Onancock’s prestigious artists) and a charming “Victorian Lady” that represents the architecture of the town in the 1800’s.

Starting at noon, floats and crowds will march down Main Street in Hurlock to welcome the holidays! Immediately after the parade, come to the train station for other Christmas activities, welcomed by Mayor Joyce Spratt. While inside the train station, make sure to visit Santa.

The Delmarva Discovery Center hosts their annual Winter Watermen’s Festival this Saturday, an event that aims to highlight the stories and craft of our local watermen. Enjoy local artisans and free food samples of some of your favorite local fare. This year, the lineup includes Ed Thieler and his handcrafted model boats, Don Willey with a knot tying demonstration and display, a display courtesy of Saxis Island Museum, Teddy Daniels’ “Treasures of the Past” demonstration, and Eddie Hearth crafting one of his famous Hearth Crab Pots.
