Oftentimes, new readers ask us, “what is ShoreBread?” The professional answer is, “an E-Magazine highlighting all that the Eastern Shore has to offer…” But the truth is, underneath it all, ShoreBread is about community. We cover all of the Eastern Shore, from Chincoteague to St. Michaels, and the one theme that consistently shines through is the incredible sense of community that reverberates not only in each town, but across the Shore as a whole. It’s not unusual to see a fundraiser for a local-in-need and at ShoreBread we love the chance to help spread the word…and the love. This week, we call your attention to a local man (and friend of ShoreBread) that needs your love and support more than ever after suffering paralysis from a severe car accident.
On Wednesday morning, Trey Cantwell, a 27 year old Parsonsburg man, was on his way to work with friend (and driver) Jason Taylor when icy roads caused Taylor to lose control of the truck and flip multiple times, with the vehicle ultimately landing upside down. Jason was able to pull Trey from the wreckage but at that time, Trey was unable to move or feel his body. After hours of emergency surgery, doctors were able to save Trey’s use of his upper body, however he was diagnosed as paralyzed from the waist down. Trey is fortunate to have the love of family and friends to keep him inspired and motivated, particularly the knowledge that he will be meeting his first child in October; however, despite a positive outlook, Trey still needs help from the community as he begins a long emotional, physical and financial journey.
The Trey Will Walk campaign was formed within days of Trey’s accident in an effort to not only raise money for Trey and his family, but more importantly, to show just how much love and support he has. There will be multiple fundraisers over the next few weeks and months, the first set for this Wednesday, March 12 at Roadie Joe’s in Salisbury from 7pm until 2am. Donations will be accepted, along with a silent auction and the sale of merchandise to help raise additional funds. A percentage of the bar proceeds from the evening will be donated as well.
Sunday, March 30, friends, family and supporters will gather at Station 7 Restaurant in Pittsville from 3pm until 7pm. Also on tap, is the Cantwell Classic Softball Tournament on Saturday, April 12 at 3pm.
