After months of work, and more than a year of fundraising, The Delmarva Discovery Center & Museum is excited to announce the opening dates for the new Wally Gordon River Otter Exhibit! The newest addition to the facility will house two North American River Otters – and will open its doors to the public on Monday July 25th.

The river otters are the newest additions to the Discovery Centers wide array of interactive displays, and will be the first resident mammals at the facility. While the finishing touches are being put on their new digs, the River Otters are resting comfortably as guests at the Salisbury Zoo.

Here are just a few quick fun facts about River Otters to get you revved up about the new exhibit:

  • Otters hold hands while eating, sleeping and resting so that they don’t drift away from each other.
  • Otters use tools to play – while many animals use rocks as tools, some otters will use rocks as a stand-in for a ball.
  • River Otters spend most of their time on land.
  • Otters are the cutest things ever! (okay…that one is an opinion!)

Now, if you want to get a “sneak preview” of these playful little guys, the Delmarva Discovery Center is hosting a special Members Only Sneak Peek from 3:00-5:00 on Sunday July 24th. Sorry this event is for members only!

Not a member? Not a problem! You can become a member and get your invite to the event! Members also get free admission to the museum, discounted rates on many special programs and qualifying store purchases.

Once the exhibit opens, you can stop in to see the River Otters at the Discovery Center during regular business hours: Monday thru Saturday 10am-4pm and Sundays from 12pm-4pm.
