Happy 40th Anniversary to the Ocean Bowl Skate Park in Ocean City! Be there to help celebrate this monumental milestone – with free all-day skate, live music, skate jam sessions, door prizes and an Ocean Bowl heritage awards ceremony. The fun begins at noon on Friday, August 19th and will go into the early evening (wrapping up at 7 p.m.).
The Ocean Bowl, located at 3rd Street and St. Louis Avenue, holds the distinction of being the oldest operating municipal skate park in the US, first opening the gates in 1976, after the town of Ocean City banned skateboarding on city streets.
From its humble beginnings, with a simple four foot deep asphalt bowl, the park has had several facelifts over the years and undergone a number of expansions. Presently the modernized Ocean Bowl Skate Park offers skateboarders and inline skaters new challenges, with the perfect harmony of east coast and west coast styles melded into one spectacular space.
The park includes:
- 17,000-square-foot concrete-based park
- Pool bowl with deep and shallow end
- Large vert ramp and mini ramp
- 13,000-square-foot innovative open concrete street course with hit walls, hips and small bowl
- Provides challenges for skaters of ALL abilities
The Ocean Bowl Skate Park stays busy with many traveling demos, tours and skating contests, as well as youth camps, lessons and clinics with professional skaters. Most recently, the skate park has added a new deck design program where participants were instructed on how to design, prepare and paint a board, and a new Skate Movie by the bay event (August 26th), that will allow skaters to submit their own footage to show off their skills on the big screen under the stars!
