What do cars, poker, and children with cancer all have in common? Well, oftentimes, nothing. However, the Justin’s Beach House Poker and Fun Car Rallye event on Saturday, March 4, 2017 is combining these – usually – unrelated items for a good cause.
If you’re unfamiliar with Justin’s Beach House, the house, located in Bethany Beach, DE, was built in remembrance of Justin W. Jennings for families with cancer to get away and enjoy some fun, family time during an otherwise stressful period in their lives. The event is now entering its 5th year and is being organized by Nancy and Bob Lueckel, Pauline and Bob Shuman, and Michelle and Ed Byczynski. We talked to organizer Bob Lueckel about just how the events works.
On Saturday, March 4th, all participants will gather at Hooked Up Ale House and Raw Bar in Millville, DE (just outside of Bethany Beach, DE). Registration will be open from 10 AM to 11 AM where all the drivers will be assigned a car number. Once registration closes at 11 AM, everyone will receive a set of directions, two playing cards, and they will be sent out in the order in which they arrived. The directions are interspersed with five different questions that can only be answered by being extremely observant of one’s surroundings on the course. The drivers will have to answer the questions before they can move onto the next direction.
This is also a poker run so, throughout the course, participants will encounter a few checkpoints where they will get to choose more cards for their hand. When the drivers return to the restaurant at the end of the course, they will get to pick two more cards. The drivers will then pick their best poker hand from the cards they’ve collected throughout the course. The organizers will then add up the points from their hands and for each of the questions they answered correctly. Prizes will be awarded for the top placing cars.
The cost to participate is $30 per car and, over the last four years, the event has raised approximately $5,000. For more information, please call Bob L. at 443-299-9125 or Bob S. at 845-656-5438. Come out on March 4th to enjoy a fun tour of Sussex County all while raising money for a good cause, Justin’s Beach House.
