The Rehoboth Art League Regional Juried Photography Exhibition debuts on Friday January 4, with an opening reception for the artists and public from 5-7pm!

The scope of this year’s exhibition was expanded by inviting artists living in Delaware, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, New Jersey, and Washington D. C. to participate. There will be a variety of photographs using traditional and unique methods from 53 artists who were selected from over 250 submissions.

Three artists will be given awards of artistic merit. The First Place award, sponsored by Delaware Beach Life, is a five hundred dollar cash prize and the opportunity to have a solo exhibition concurrent with the 2020 Regional Juried Photography Exhibition. The Second Place award, sponsored by Sally Packard and Dinah Reath, and a Third Place award, will also be announced at the opening reception at 6pm.

Also opening that night will be a solo show from our Juror and Awards Judge, Alida Fish.

Alida Fish

Fish is known for her still life work using manipulated photo processes, mythic tableaux of flora and curiosities, and disquieting spectral images. Throughout her career, she has indulged the make-believe, using photography as a tool for her imagination. “The impulse to populate and control an invented world has led to photographs of sculptures that appear to metamorphose into living flesh, plants that emerge as heroic in their struggle to exist, and curious objects that are a testament to the wonders of life on this planet,” she said.

Fish is Professor Emerita at The University of the Arts, Philadelphia, where she served as Chair of the Media Arts Department, and later Interim Dean of the College of Art, Media, and Design. Her photographs have been exhibited throughout the country in galleries and museums including The Portland Museum, The Albright-Knox, and The Florence Griswold Museum. She has been a resident artist at institutions such as The American Academy in Rome, Anderson Ranch in Colorado, and Visual Studies Workshop in Rochester, New York.

Fish will be giving a Gallery Talk on Saturday, January 5, at 2pm in RAL’s Corkran Gallery, where she will discuss her process of selecting works for the exhibition as well as her artistic response to some of the pieces in the exhibition. Artists are invited to engage in an open or private dialogue of their works.

Gallery Talk
