We moved to Berlin, MD 10 years ago, renting a home on Williams Street. Moving to Berlin from Jamestown Road in Ocean City, was more of an adjustment than originally thought. Used to the constant hum of vehicles up and down Coastal Highway, to literally crickets in Berlin, was at first unsettling. Taking time to adjust to the serenity of a small town, another unnerving adjustment was how bright the streetlights were, but they were an awful yellow.
After renting a home on Williams Street for 7 months during the construction of what became our home for 9 years, we forgot about the "yellow lights". This December when we made the official move into the Humphreys House, we again were reminded of these horrible yellow lights. Over the past several years many improvements have been made across town. New businesses have come in and fixed up store fronts, in turn bringing in new visitors and some becoming new residents of our lovely town. With this revival of interest in a small historic town, also brings in more events for residents and tourists alike. These changes are more and more common now, including a couple new restaurants on the horizon to offer more variety and attract those who may not have yet ventured this way.
Among these new changes, all for the better I must say, the one that we were not expecting happened this week. The Electric Company of Berlin was on our street, changing the street lights! The new lights being installed no longer cast a gloomy yellow haze on our street, but now have a crisp clear light that seems to fill the street for safety's sake, but not so bright that they invade your sleeping space.
This may seem like a small change, but one that struck a chord with us. Appreciate all the positive changes that are made, and know that they are meant to help sustain a community such as the one we enjoy as residents of Berlin, MD.
