Garden of Eden Orchards is nestled along the very outer edge of Salisbury. Driving down Nanticoke Road towards Garden of Eden Orchards feels like you’re miles away from the traffic of Route 50 and the businesses of the Eastern Shore of Maryland’s largest city. When we arrive, we find friendly shopkeepers to point us in the direction of the best blueberries, the object of our desire on this particular trip. With a large bucket in hand we head towards the orchard, looking for those that have already ripened. Pick-your-own blueberries turns out to be a surprisingly easy task, and our bucket fills quickly. We especially appreciate the height blueberries grow within: high enough to avoid constant bending, and low enough for everyone to reach!
Kids would be great helpers, and the picking is quick enough to hold their interest. While on our trip we experienced a young boy teaching his father that the best berries were those that pulled off the plant easily. We also experienced another young boy knock a half full bucket of blueberries out of his mother’s hands while trying to do a little taste test, strictly for quality control purposes. Be sure to hold on to those buckets tightly!
After half an hour we have a full bucket of delicious berries and grand ideas about how to use them all. At the time of our trip the pricing was $2.70 per pound and the berries were just getting ripe. You can visit Garden of Eden Orchards Monday – Saturday from 8:00am – 5:00pm or Sunday from 12:00pm – 4:00pm.
We’re seeing lots of blueberry waffles in our future!
