What’s the best way to visit Assateague Island? A quick drive through the park. A day spent lounging beachside. A ride along the bike path. A two and a half hour paddle through the marshlands and bayside waters where you can examine local wildlife, identify perched birds, learn the ponies by name, and pick the brain of an environmental tour guide. The last option sounds the best, of course.
Want to take a tour of Assateague Island that you’ll never forget? Do so with SuperFun Eco Tours. SuperFun Eco Tours is a full-service kayak outfitter that specializes in kayak tours and rental services on Assateague Island.
All tours include a full lesson and instruction. The SuperFun guides will make sure that all participants are prepared and oriented before wading out into the water with a rental. Each kayaker is given a nice map of the area to help them navigate and track paddling paths. The SuperFun directors stress that they want all of their kayakers to be comfortable and confident in their abilities to paddle while being able to enjoy the local scenery and on-water experience.
SuperFun Eco Tours has a collection of 25 kayaks. Single kayaks can be rented for $15/hour or $50/day. Tandem, double, kayaks can be rented for $25/hour or $75/day. Renting a kayak is the best way to explore Assateague Island as quickly or as slowly as you please. Every participant, whether on a tour or as a renter, will be equipped with a high quality life jacket and an NRS paddle.
SuperFun offers a variety of tours that will appeal to anyone who wants to paddle. Tours offered include: Wildlife Discovery, Sunset, Full Moon, Burley Oak Beer Tour, Delicious Delmarva, Shell Fishing, Team Building, and Full-Day tours.
“The Wildlife Discovery Tour is the most popular tour offered during the summer months. This two and a half hour tour is perfect for families and children,” said Neil Nimrichter, SuperFun guide and part-owner.
The Wildlife Discovery Tour departs at least twice every day during the summer season. The SuperFun crew hopes to have three tours scheduled every day: 9:00 am, 1:00 pm, and 6:30 pm.
If you’re looking for an adventurous tour that offers a chance to enjoy some good-tasting beverages afterwards, try the Burley Oak Beer Tour. This is one of the newest tours that SuperFun offers. It’s actually a two-part journey.
The Burley Oak Brewery Kayak Tour offers visitors a chance to kayak at Assateague Island and then sample some of the areas finest locally produced beer. After checking out the local ecology, paddlers can hop on the SuperFun bus with their guides and set forth on a 10-mile trek towards the Brewery. Once at the Berlin’s only brewery, participants can tour and taste (21 years of age and older only) the fine craft beers produced in the historic town by Bryan Brushmiller and his talented staff.
Another new addition to the SuperFun tours arrived in Early March; the outfitters purchased several hybrid stand-up paddleboard/kayaks. The transitional boards can be used as either. The Nalu SUPs offer a fun challenge to bayside tour-takers.
“The SUPs give those who are curious about the stand-up paddle boarding craze a chance to try it out. 2 hours of stand-up paddling is tough, a real workout,” said Nimrichter.
The conversion paddle-board/kayak crafts give paddlers the option of standing for a while or sitting, like on a traditional kayak, if they get tired. The SuperFun crew currently has 6 of these combo vessels.
The SuperFun guides encourage their guests to have a great time while exploring the diverse barrier island. Their tours are meant to be a fun and educational natural experience centered on the wildlife and natural resources that Assateague offers. The SuperFun guides can cater to all skill-levels, experiences, and groups.
“Kayaking is a huge deal for some people. Some are scared of the water. We want them to be safe. Sometimes, we have to remind our tours that it’s just a bay – nothing too scary – and then educate them about the waters they are in,” Nimrichter said.
SuperFun was started by Neil Nimrichter, Tom Simon, and Dale Barber. Nimrichter and Simon both attended Ohio University and graduated with degrees in Environmental Adventure Studies. The two then went on to hold multiple jobs at environmental camps, ecological government positions, and things of the like. Simon served two years as a member of the National Park Service at Assateague. Barber has a degree in Environmental Science and enjoys everything nature has to offer, also.
Needless to say, you’ll be safe while touring with SuperFun and their trusted guides.
