The 5th Annual Jazz and Blues and Bash returns to the historic town of Berlin, MD Saturday May 5th. The event, a springtime musical counterpart to the hugely successful fall Fiddler’s Convention, has grown in size and popularity in just a few years time.
Berlin, MD lends itself to this type of festive occasion. In the heart of town the streets are blocked off so revelers can enjoy the sounds, dance in the streets if they wish, sample delicious eats, and browse through the wares offered by various vendors. Parking is free in all municipal lots and within easy walking distance from the center of town.
Two stages will feature six regional jazz and blues acts. The music begins at noon kicking off with the Joe Baione Quartet. They are followed by the Dixieland Direct Jazz Band—a New Orleans Dixieland Band from Washington, DC, Eastern Shore favorites Chris English and the Tom Larsen Band, and Project Natale. The Daryl Davis Band closes the event, taking the stage at 6 p.m. and playing until 8 p.m.
According to the Berlin Jazz and Blues Bash via their Facebook Page, “Davis, a multi-talented vocalist, guitarist, composer and keyboard master from Washington, D.C., has played with such music greats as Muddy Waters, Chuck Berry, and the Coasters. Margot is thought to be the finest blues singer in the area.”
Numerous display and visual artists will be showcasing and selling their work. The event is a wonderful opportunity to appreciate the art of regional artists, and browse through the many quaint shops that line the streets of Berlin’s commercial district.
Food vendors such as Flannery’s and The Globe will serve New Orleans-style food, keeping with the spirit of the jazz and blues theme. A beer and wine tent will heighten the festive mood. The opportunity to take a charming horse and carriage ride will be offered for a small fee – $5 per person, (children under age 3 are free).
The event is family-friendly and the musical acts are offered free of charge. Limited seating will be available in front of each stage. Spectators are advised to bring their own lawn chairs as 2,500 – 3,000 people are expected to attend.
