The forecast for Labor Day Weekend is set to be sunny and in the low 80’s—perfect weather for visiting the shore. It’s also prime conditions for playing golf—and this year golfers can tee up for a worthy cause.
Ocean City area golf courses are participating in the fifth annual Patriot Golf Day Weekend, over the Labor Day holiday, September 2-5th. This national event is the flagship fundraiser for the Folds of Honor Program, a non-profit organization providing post secondary education scholarships for the children or spouses of wounded or fallen military personnel. The PGA of America and the United States Golf Association jointly support the program.
Major Dan Rooney; founder of the Folds of Honor Foundation, F-16 pilot, PGA professional, and USGA member started the inaugural Patriot Golf Day. Rooney asked golfers over Labor Day weekend 2007, to donate $1 to their greens fees, which resulted in donations of $1.1 million. Since that year, over 2,000 recipients in all 50 states have received post secondary education funds as a result of Patriot Golf Day Weekend.
Local coordinator Mike Cleary, of Ocean City Golf Getaway said he was moved to do something when he found out 87% of family members of wounded or fallen soldiers will not qualify for education benefits. These families are already taxed due to untimely death or injuries, yet the opportunity to better their futures is in most cases, unavailable.
Golfers and non-golfers have the chance to change the future for the dependents compromised by the death or injury of our military while in combat…”they served us, now it’s time to salute them.”
Golfers can add as little as $1 to their greens fees this holiday weekend. Non-golfers can contribute by making a donation at www.foldsofhonor.org
For those who love to golf, this is your opportunity to say to those who served–potentially having given the ultimate sacrifice—we salute you.
