What’s going on this weekend in Delmarva? Art, culture, and wildlife seem to be the main attractions during mid-November. With events for the whole family, enjoy yourselves, next weekend will be filled with hustle and bustle and lots of holiday decorations! Socially speaking, here’s what’s happening…
Winterfest of Lights – Ocean City, MD
Winterfest of Lights officially kicked off the Christmas season yesterday. Hop aboard the Winterfest Express train and cruise through Northside Park (127th Street, Bayside) to check out the colorful animated holiday displays made of little, glistening lights. Join the Winterfest helpers while they sing and enjoy Christmas carols and drink hot cocoa. A refreshment stand offers steamy hot chocolate–perfect for warming up after the chilly November train ride. Santa will be stationed in his workshop so children can drop off their Christmas lists early and parents can prepare for photos will the jolly old soul. The Winterfest of Lights tour costs $5 per person and children under the age of 11 are free. Winterfest will continue through the season until January 1st.
3rd Friday – Salisbury, MD
3nd Friday brings music and art to the galleries, shops, and restaurants in downtown Salisbury, MD. On Friday, November 18th, shops throughout downtown Salisbury will stay open late, feature local artists, host art receptions, and provide live entertainment.
The annual Tree Lighting will take place during the 3rd Friday events. On the steps of the Government Office Building on Main Street, performers will sing, dance, and celebrate the lighting for the holiday tree. Santa will say hello to children as they check out the large Christmas tree covered in lights. Santa will arrive at 6:30 pm. 3rd Friday begins at 5 pm and continues until 8 pm.
Salisbury History & Culture Showcase – Salisbury, MD
On Friday, November 18th, the Nabb Center on the campus of Salisbury University will be opening the doors of their showroom to the public and showing their latest collection. The archival collections of objects that tell the story of the 1886 Salisbury fire have filled the gallery setting in the center. On October 17th, 1886, a disastrous fire destroyed 200 buildings and burned 22 acres of land in Salisbury.
The Edward H. Nabb Research Center for Delmarva History and Culture collects, preserves, and archives historic materials. The shelves and storage rooms of the center are stocked with information that let visitors take a peek at the past.
Photos, maps, period clothing and tools will be on display. The Nabb Center will have the showcase open from 1 – 4 pm on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays until December 16th. The Nabb Center is located on Wayne Street.
Art League Opening Reception – Rehoboth, DE
The work of Jack Lewis, a 99 year-old painter, will be on display at the Rehoboth Art League gallery on Dodds Lane in Rehoboth Beach starting on Friday, November 18th and continuing until the end of December. Lewis is one of Delaware’s most celebrated artists. He is known for his paintings of coastal scenery.
The art reception begins at 5 pm and continues until 7 pm. Select pieces will be for sale. Some paintings are new works, never before seen in public, others are from past collections. Photos, sketchbook drawings, and video will also be on display. The selection is known as “A Survey of Jack Lewis: From Home and Beyond”.
Night Prowl – Pocomoke, MD
Feel like prowling? The Assateague Coastal Trust will be hosting a Night Prowl at the Pocomoke River State Park on Saturday, November 19th. Local wildlife experts will lead a tour of the Shad Landing Park as guests search for owls and other creatures that are active at night.
The event starts at the Nature Center. Guests will be able to get up close and personal with live owls. The goal is to identify different creatures that live in the forests. Parents and children are invited to check out the winged creatures and their natural habitat.
The Night Prowl costs $3 per person. If interested in participating, visit the Assateague Coastal Trust website and RSVP. Be sure to wear warm clothes, sturdy shoes, and bring a flashlight to help you prowl. The Shad Landing Park is located in the Pocomoke River State Park just north of Snow Hill, MD. The event starts at 5:30 pm and ends at 7 pm. Hot chocolate will be served in the Nature Center after the hike.
Six Eleven Art Show – West Ocean City, MD
Six Eleven Salon and Gallery opened in West Ocean City last month. Artist Trevor Dundt’s photography was featured at the gallery last month. On Saturday, November 19th, an art show will take place to showcase the photography of Nick Denny. From 8 – 11 pm, Denny’s work will be on the salon and gallery walls while guests mingle. Denny’s work includes water scenes, surfing, athletes, nature, and portraits.
Six Eleven Salon and Gallery, located in the Trader Lee’s Shopping Center on the corner of Routes 50 and 611 in West Ocean City, will provide hord’oeurves, beverages, and music. Denny’s art will be for sale and the salon will be booking appointments.
