I think all of us have been touched by loved ones and friends who have had some type of cancer. Its truly shocking how many people have been affected, and sadly, at all ages. It is so important to keep aware and to help prevent and save lives.

I’m glad to be part of a cause that can help those that have to fight the battle. It is a heartbreaking experience for the patient and their families, but there are organizations that bring hope. Women Supporting Women gives that and more. Locally, Women Supporting Women supports survivors of breast cancer through mentoring and provides counseling for newly diagnosed patients and their families. They also maintain a library of support material, provide wigs, scarves, head coverings, prosthesis, and bras for patients.

In the United States, one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. It is the second leading cause of death among women. With those facts, it is wise to start an early detection plan first my implementing self-exams, then scheduling exams and mammograms based on your age and family history.

 Symptoms to Look For:

– Nipple discharge

-Invert or inward nipple

– Change in the pore size of your skin

– Change in breast size or shape

– Dimpling anywhere on breast

– Nipple tenderness

– Any lumps
