Every year, at the exact stroke of midnight on December 31st, people around the world take part in a huge celebration. They celebrate by watching a symbolic giant ball fall slowly to the ground, kissing their neighbors, twirling loud noisemakers or popping glitter filled balloons, screams of celebration are heard and bubbling drinks are consumed.  New Year’s is a time to celebrate and in Berlin, MD, folks know how to do it right.

The square of Main Street and Broad Street in Berlin will be a scene of wild partiers on New Year’s Eve – just as it has been for the past several years on the early morning of January 1st. Residents, visitors, and nearby locals gather to watch a hand-made ball covered in holiday lights as it is lowered from the rooftop of the apartment building above Towne Center Antiques.
Berlin, MD New Year's Eve Celebration
Historians believe that New Year’s Eve celebrations can be traced back to the ancient Romans who celebrated the Winter Solstice in late December. Since Roman times, celebrators have deemed the term ‘New Year’s’ and carry on accordingly by toasting to a new beginning. Auld Lang Syne, that slow-paced song that no-one really knows what it really means, has been sung since the 18th century. It’s a Scottish folk melody that means ‘old long since’ and translates to ‘the good old days’.  The entire song is a meant to encourage carolers to forget about the past and look ahead to a new year filled with hope.

Those visiting the historic town of Berlin this year will be joyful and filled with hope. The town of Berlin, MD takes cue from the world-famous Times Square ball drop as a similar atmosphere is created. Dancing in the streets, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks will be sold in front of the Atlantic Hotel, food stands will be present, in combination with live entertainment will make for an unforgettable New Year’s night. Horse and carriage rides will be available to those looking for something romantic to take part in before the clock strikes midnight.
