While the back-to-school commercials creep onto TV and the radio, we’re focusing on the fact that there is still lots of summer left to enjoy! We’re never short on events to share with you all and this month is no exception as towns across Delmarva gear up for some of the summer’s finest events. The Berlin Peach Festival, White Marlin Open, the Wicomico County and Worcester County Fairs, and OC Jeep Week are just a few of the events on the horizon, with plenty more to follow. While this is by no means an exhaustive list, it’s a great start to what is shaping up to be a fantastic month. Enjoy!
Berlin Peach Festival
When: Saturday, August 1, 11am- 4pm
Where: Lawn of the Taylor House Museum
What: Berlin’s annual community festival returns! The event is held each year in celebration of the town’s history with a special focus on the town’s longstanding love affair with peaches. Pie eating and pie baking contests will serve as headliners for the event, coupled with craft demonstrations, exhibits, games, vendors, food and music. Don’t skip out on the peach ice cream and peach pie!
Dewey Beach Scavenger Hunt
When: Saturday, August 1
Where: Dewey Beach, DE
What: Described as part scavenger hunt, part Amazing Race, this event is sure to be fun for all involved. Teams of 4 to 8 people will be dressed in costume and challenged to roam Dewey to complete as much of the Hunt as possible. The reward – in addition to a full day of fun – is great prizes for top teams, including $500 in cash, free bar tabs, concert tickets, and more. Price for registration is $50 per team prior to July 31 and $60 per team on the day of the event.
Blessing of the Combines
When: Saturday, August 1, 11am-3pm
Where: Downtown Snow Hill
What: Nothing says tradition and pride in your local heritage quite like the annual Blessing of the Combines. Now in its 17th year, the event aims to pay homage to the rich tradition of agriculture in Worcester County with a parade of antique and modern tractors, exhibits, displays, kids activities, live music, festival food vendors and more!
Sail on Kalmar Nyckel, Tall Ship of Delaware
When: Tuesday, August 4-Monday, September 7
Where: Public Pier at Cape May-Lewes Ferry Terminal
What: For the month of August the Kalmar Nyckel will be docked in Delaware, with plenty of chances for you to go for a sail aboard the ship. The Kalmar Nyckel is a re-creation of the original ship that brought the earliest settlers from Sweden to Delaware. Learn firsthand what it was like to cross the Atlantic in the 17th Century. Tickets are $60 for adults and $40 for youth ages 17 and younger.
White Marlin Open
When: August 3-August 7
Where: Harbour Island Marina (14th Street bayside) Ocean City, MD
What: Ocean City hosts the world’s largest bill fishing tournament each year, bringing thousands of spectators to the docks to watch as over 300 boats vie for over $2 million in prize money. One of our favorite parts is watching the boats leave the inlet in the early morning hours on the first day – definitely worth waking up early for! Of course the weigh-ins hold the real excitement, and typically heat up in the early evening hours.
Salisbury Super Soap Box Derby
When: Saturday, August 8, noon-3pm
Where: Downtown Market Street Parking Lot
What: The Salisbury Jaycees and the St. Francis De Sales Boy Scout Troop 185 proudly presents the Salisbury Super Soapbox Spectacular! The event is fun for all ages to enjoy, and includes an impressive run of locally crafted and constructed soap box cars.
Worcester County Fair
When: August 7-August 9 (Friday: 8am-8:30pm; Saturday: 11am-8pm; Sunday: 11am-4pm)
Where: Byrd Park, Snow Hill, MD
What: The county fair returns with food vendors, antique cars, karate and judo demonstrations, craft vendors, music, a horse show, livestock competition, and a talent show. It’s family fun, all weekend long…for free!
Artists Paint OC: A Plein Air Event
When: August 6-9
Where: Ocean City, MD
What: The annual event draws artist from all over, challenging them to paint the scenic views of OC. Artists will be seen painting the greater Ocean City area from August 6-8, with artists gathering on South Division Street August 9 to paint from beach to bay, inlet to Caroline Street.
Cambridge Wheels Car Show
When: Sunday, August 9
Where: Downtown Cambridge
What: Enjoy dozens of the highest quality cars right in the historic heart of Cambridge. In addition to the display of cars, shops and restaurants will be offering specials, along with music in the streets and trophies for the winners in various categories. Perfect excuse to explore Downtown Cambridge!
Miss & Mr. Peach Pageant
When: Friday, August 14, 6-7pm
Where: Porch at the Atlantic Hotel
What: The 6th Annual Miss and Mr. Peach Pageant will coincide with the 2nd Friday Art Stroll, providing an adorable backdrop for the town’s monthly art walk. Contestants must be 4-7 years of age and reside in Worcester County. Contestants will be judged on poise, personality and stage presence. Registration is available at the Peach Festival as well as at the Berlin Visitor Center up until 5:30 on August 14. The pageant will take place on the porch of the Atlantic Hotel so come out and show these little stars some support!
Wicomico County Fair
When: August 14-16 (Friday: 2-9pm; Saturday: 10am-9pm; Sunday: noon-4pm)
Where: Winterplace Park, Salisbury, MD
What: Originally established in 1936, the Wicomico County Fair returns this year after the decision was made to combine the traditions of the Wicomico Home and Farm Show with the Chicken Festival. Expect three days of kids games, home arts, animals, auctions, entertainment and competitions.
OC Sandfest
When: August 24-30
Where: North Division Street to 4th Street, Ocean City
What: OC Sandfest returns to Ocean City with what will surely be another impressive display of giant sand sculptures. August 23-28, watch as master sand sculptors transform our local beaches into massive works of art. The displays will remain intact through August 30 so be sure to take a look at all the magnificent pieces.
OC Jeep Week
When: August 27-30
Where: Convention Center in OCMD and Jeep Jam in Berlin, MD
What: Jeep enthusiasts look forward to this one all year long, as 250+ Jeeps converge on the area for Beach Crawls, Jeep Jams, and Show & Shines.
North American Sea Glass Festival
When: August 29-30
Where: Ocean City Convention Center
What: Internationally-recognized sea glass jewelry artists, experience collectors, and vendors will gather for the annual festival, which will also include presentations, lectures, and exhibitions.
