Local fans of the television show Extreme Makeover Home Edition have a lot to celebrate this week as the heralded show has chosen a Lewes, DE family for their current build. The project began Monday August 22nd when Extreme Makeover surprised the Dunning family with the knock on their door that would change their lives.
Dale Dunning founded the organization “Jusst Sooup” while she was in college. Years later Dale, husband Ken, and son Brooks wake up every morning at 2am to provide meals for four soup kitchens in Delaware. The essentially live where they work—in a small rental that functions more as a storage facility for the mass quantities of food they must keep on hand—rather than a personal home. Dale has a dream–she’d love to create a Jusst Sooup Ranch—a house with a large-scale kitchen equipped to create even more meals for families across Delaware, lodging and support for families in need, a garden, crops, and small farm that would produce the food to supply the food kitchen. It’s like a modern-day commune with a cause, and it’s coming to fruition this week.
Local Delaware builder Schell Brothers is at the helm of the build, and together with the Extreme Home Makeover team–including team leader Ty Pennington and designers Paige Hemmis, Sabrina Soto, Michael Moloney, and John Littlefield—and a local cast and crew of volunteers and businesses, they have just under a week to make Dale’s dream a reality.
