Summer is in full swing on the Shore, which means parents are constantly looking for fun activities to enjoy with their little ones. While the beach is fun (and free), the area is full of adventures, destinations and events, from Salisbury to Rehoboth, and everywhere in between. Stops at local museums, free movies on the beach, boardwalk bites, or an afternoon of fishing are just a few of the summer kids’ activities that we uncovered for you this week. Keep reading for more…
Each week throughout the summer, free movies on the beach are offered in Ocean City, with four different opportunites to enjoy a free movie on the big screen while digging your toes in the sand. Every Wednesday, on the beach at 118th Street in front of the Carousel Hotel, free movies start at 8:30. Thursdays, movies are held at 91st Street, in front of the Princess Royale and also begin at 8:30. On the big screen this Thursday, July 25 is Wreck-It Ralph. Finally, every Monday and Friday, movies are available at the beach at 27th at 8:30. Just grab the kids, some snacks and a couple of beach chairs and you’ve got free movies lined up for practically the whole week!
Ocean City Life-Saving Station Museum
Exhibits at the Ocean City Life-Saving Station Museum include “The Boardwalk of Yesterday,” “Davy Jones Locker,” “Sands of the World,” and the most recent addition, “Surf’s Up!” But that’s not all, there are also aquariums featuring local marine life, along with several free, kid-friendly, events all week long. This week, we suggest stopping by for the “Aquarium Feeding” program, held every Saturday at 10:00am. Kids will find themselves learning about our local sea life, while observing the sea critters during their morning feeding.
Fishing Fun at the Delmarva Discovery Center
Located in Pocomoke along the Pocomoke River, the Delmarva Discovery Center serves as a source of learning and discovery for Delmarva’s locals and visitors. Delmarva’s cultural and natural heritage are the focal point of the center, and with the exhibits come a number of events this summer. Every Friday, parents and kids are invited to come fish at Stevens Pond to learn about native fish while trying to catch the “big one.” Meet at the Delmarva Discovery Center and come prepared to roll up your sleeves for a little fishin’ fun. Fishing is free with paid admission to the Delmarva Discovery Center.
The list of games and rides to uncover along Ocean City’s boardwalk is never-ending, and so is the number of tasty treats! While cruising the boards this week, we suggest sampling some of Ocean City’s world famous popcorn. We can never pick a favorite, so you decide for yourself – Fisher’s or Dolles?!? If you need a little salty with that sweet caramel flavor, jump in line for some Thrasher’s French Fries – a boardwalk classic that never disappoints.
For some fast family fun, a trip to the Midway Speedway Park in Rehoboth is the ticket. Dubbed “your place to race” the Speedway Park offers five go-kart tracks, including two designed specifically for kiddie drivers. There’s also ten different styles of go-karts to choose from. Midway boasts the fastest go-karts in Rehoboth area and some the fastest go-karts on the entire Delmarva peninsula. Too much speed? Slow down afterwards with the climbing wall or bumper boats.
