Salisbury University students are at the halfway point of the Fall Semester, and with Thanksgiving break still a month away, many students and families look forward to Family Weekend as the chance to not only show their loved ones around the SU campus, but to also reunite with their families and take a brief reprieve from studying. This past weekend Salisbury University students had a chance to visit with relatives and take part in the campus events associated with Family Weekend.
SU Student Kayla Wumer reported that her favorite part of Family Weekend was “getting to see my mom, showing her around campus, and hearing about everything going on back home.”
Family Weekend began Friday afternoon with the Business Olympics on the Perdue School of Business lawn. Family members competed by completing business related questions and activities to win grand prizes such as iPads and Kindles. Another unique opportunity for students and family members to participate in was a kayak tour on the Manokin River and Jones Creek. Hosted by Adrenaline High, the group was offering a trip to “Discover Delmarva.” Saturday night offered a hilarious Magic and Comedy show presented by Joseph Tran. The show left students and parents alike giggling with excitement while simultaneously wondering, “how did he do that?”
The University also hosted informative presentations on diverse topics that affect college students. Discourses on financial options, studying abroad, and tips to be competitive in the job market allowed families to learn about these subjects together.
After activities and presentations, families came out to the football game to cheer on the Gulls as they played St. John Fisher College. The Gulls muscled through the fits and spits of rainfall and maintained a close lead for the whole game. In the end, Salisbury triumphed with a score of 42-35. With some players limping off the field and slightly rain trodden, it was a hard fought game and a well-deserved win.
The Commons Dining facilities joined in the fun as well, creating a dining experience that left family members feeling right at home. Multiple Jazz Brunches provided live music for students to enjoy while devouring their specially made waffles and omelets. The Commons also presented a “Recipes from Home” dinner with students’ favorite recipes that had been submitted earlier this year. Most students also enjoyed the added benefit of special desserts that were available in honor of Family Weekend.
Time flies when you’re having fun, and Family Weekend was no exception. Sadly, Mom, Dad, and the siblings were packed back into the car heading for home in no time, with students left prepping for the second half of the semester.
