Typically known for its good vibes and boundless food, The Globe in Berlin also finds many ways to give back to the community. Past charitable and philanthropic endeavors are varied, and include events such as clothing drives benefiting the victims of Hurricane Sandy in 2012. The Globe family is back at it, collaborating with Maryland Food Bank and local brewery, Burley Oak, to collect food for families in-need across the Eastern Shore.
The main event will take place at Burley Oak at 6 p.m. on Monday, June 16th. The charity event will be a part of Burley Oak’s Monday charity series, hosted every Monday by Burley Oak to benefit various non-profits and organizations.
In order to synchronize the food drive, “Front Desk Becky” from The Globe had a meeting of the minds with Ralph Hickman, one of the Directing Managers at the Maryland Food Bank in Salisbury. The Maryland Food Bank provides assistance to families all over Maryland and even offers after-school programs for children who are “food-insecure,” and those who are not sure where their next meal is coming from. The statistics are grim, with 1 in every 5 kids served by the Maryland Food Bank deemed “food insecure.” Further studies reveal that hungry kids have more trouble paying attention in class and school, as well as maintaining appropriate energy levels and proper grades, issues that affect their social abilities and problems controlling their behavior.
The Food Bank obtains food donations from many different sources such as, buying food from local grocery stores at discounted rates, obtaining food recently past shelf-date (USDA-approved), collecting food from government donations, and receiving local farm donations. However, the most valuable source of food donations are from efficacious food drives.
So now the question is, how can you help? Well that part is easy, The Globe will be taking food donations all week long starting on Tuesday June 10th and ending on June 16th with the big event hosted by Burley Oak on Monday, June 16. But that’s not all…The Globe has committed to donate 50 cents for every pound of food donated, so the more you donate, the more we raise as a community! Burley Oak has also committed to donate 10% of all bar sales and all tips from the event to the Maryland Food Bank. So join The Globe, Burley Oak, the Maryland Food Bank and our local community members Monday June 16th at 6 p.m. and help make a difference by simply bringing a canned good or purchasing a drink!
