“A quarter century of sharing the rich flavors, joyful sounds, and hospitality of Greece, in Ocean City.” – Alexandra Hall; St. George Greek Festival Promotion Chair
OPA! Greeks and here on the Eastern Shore can celebrate their heritage at the 25th Annual Ocean City Greek Festival hosted by the St. George Greek Orthodox Church at the Ocean City Convention Center on 40th Street this weekend July 11th until July 14th. Of course this celebration is not just for people with Grecian heritage, anyone and everyone can stop by to join in on the fun and learn a little bit more about the culture.
Whether you’re reliving vacation memories or dreaming about an adventure to Greece, come enjoy the sounds, sights and more importantly (for us) the flavors of Greece right here in Ocean City. You will certainly feel as if you’ve been transported to Greece as the vendors create an authentic atmosphere with food, wares, clothing and more. Each day the doors will open at noon and welcome you into this captivating culture as you try samples of food, buy gifts such as art, jewelry, clothing and more while learning the historic dances and language of Greece.
This year’s festival promises Greek delicacies for everyone’s palette. They have a special menu that includes quick service items such as gyros, shanks and shish kabobs made traditional and fresh as well as famous Greek pastries like baklava and melomakarona (a cookie drenched in honey and sprinkled with chopped nuts… we might go just to try this) and loukoumades (warm, freshly made, honey dipped pastry puffs sprinkled with cinnamon). They also are selling Greek coffee. All menu items are served daily beginning at 12 noon and are available for eat-in or carry-out for a beach picnic.
The schedule of events at the festival is jam packed with authentic Greek music and Greek folk dancing for your entertainment every day. After 5pm nightly, get ready to rock the house, Greek style, to the sounds of the live Greek Band, Golden Flame. Or, if that’s not your style, while dining, just sit back, relax, enjoy the music and be dazzled by the live Greek folk dance floor show. All the proceeds go directly to support the Ministries of St. George Greek Orthodox Church.
