Father’s Day is this Sunday, and we hate to admit it, but we’ve seriously dropped the ball this year on planning a fun day for the dads of ShoreBread. When you drop the ball on Mother’s Day, the answer is easy: flowers. A last minute gift for dad is a little more difficult, so we decided to make a list of our options (and share them with you all of course). Gifts are fine and dandy, but we like to plan an awesome activity each year for Father’s Day. The following are our Top Five Ways to Spend Father’s Day on Delmarva, with five wide-ranging options for all those deserving dads out there.
Super Fun Eco Tour at Assateague Outfitters
You might remember our article not too long ago on the recent addition of Assateague Outfitters along the bayside at Assateague Island National Seashore. Well, after visiting the new supply store, we were inspired to organize a company outing for one of their kayak tours. The afternoon was a huge success, which got us thinking what a great option it would be for Father’s Day fun. The tour is more than just kayaking (although that in itself would have been awesome). In addition to a kayak adventure around the bayside of Assateague, the extremely knowledgable guides divulge an abundance of cool facts about the wildlife and natural habitat at Assateague. The icing on the proverbial cake is the fact that half of the proceeds from Assateague Outfitters goes directly to Maryland Coastal Bays!
Ropes Course at Frontier Town
For an adventurous outing with dad, we suggest hitting the ropes course at Frontier Town. The High Ropes Adventure Park at Frontier Town offers three courses featuring 47 different elements and over 1200 feet of zip lines. The mental and physical challenge provides for an intensely fun afternoon as you traverse the trails. Trained course monitors insure everyone’s safety and you have to option to choose your own level of difficulty. Bond with your dad this year while testing your limits!
Golfing
This one may come across as completely stereotypical, you know, the old ‘dad just wants to go golfing’ mantra, but let’s face it, a lot of dads like golfing! To boot, we have a number of gorgeous golf courses to choose from on Delmarva. Check out a few of our area favorites:
Worcester County: Lighthouse Sound, Eagle’s Landing, River’s Run, and Ocean City Golf Club
Wicomico County: Nutter’s Crossing, Green Hill Country Club, Horse Bridge Golf Course,
Sussex County: Heritage Shores, Cripple Creek, Old Landing
Dorchester County: Hyatt River Marsh Golf Club, Cambridge Country Club
Of course, a good round of mini-golf could do the trick too.
Booze it Up in Delaware:
For the dad that loves a quality, craft beer (or liquor), head to Delaware for the day to enjoy a tour or tasting at some of Delaware’s finest boozy establishments. Obviously, Dogfish Head is the first to come to mind, the mega popular brewery is definitely worth visiting, as is its counterpart, the Dogfish Head Pub in Downtown Rehoboth. And speaking of Dogfish Head, did you know about the Dogfish Inn?? The hotel is the perfect getaway, made better by the fact it’s pet-friendly (score!) and located in one of our favorite Delaware towns, Lewes. Since you’re already thinking of Delaware adventures, you might as well put Delaware Distilling Company on your radar. The full line craft distillery produces nine spirits, focusing on hand crafting quality products in small batches using natural ingredients.
Jaws at Sun & Surf
If this heat wave continues, the best gift to your dad might just be spending a few hours in the cool comfort of the AC, kicked back in a leather recliner, watching a classic thriller: Jaws! That’s right, Sun & Surf on 143rd in Ocean City is featuring a special showing of Jaws on the big screen on Father’s Day at 2pm for the 40th anniversary of the movie.
Happy Father’s Day!!
