ShoreBread has been bogged down with events lately – not that we’re complaining of course. From the upcoming Fiddler’s Convention in Berlin to the transition from Bike Week to Sunfest in Ocean City, to roller derbies and Tibetan monks in Salisbury, we’ve been bouncing all over the Shore lately…and we’re not done yet. Fall is a lively time here on the Shore, and that includes Coastal Delaware. Bethany Beach and Fenwick Island are the type of towns that you can’t help but fall in love with – the restaurants, the scenic views, the pristine beaches, and the local flavor keep us consistently coming back for more. Included in that line-up are the upcoming events that the Bethany Beach Chamber of Commerce has on tap for the next few weeks. Keep reading for a sneak peek:
Believe in Tomorrow’s 4th Annual 5k Beach Race – Saturday, September 21 at 9am
Believe In Tomorrow celebrates their 4th Annual 5k Beach Race this Saturday, September 21, with hundreds of runners and walkers turning out to support a terrific cause –the Believe in Tomorrow Children’s Foundation. ShoreBread loves to support Believe In Tomorrow any chance we can. Too often we take for granted the healing powers of spending time with loved ones, and thanks to the tireless efforts of Believe In Tomorrow, thousands of children in medical crisis are able to do just that. Believe In Tomorrow believes in keeping families together during a child’s medical crisis. Over the past 25 years, Believe In Tomorrow has provided over 600,000 individual overnight accommodations, helping families stay together throughout their child’s medical crisis.
There are countless ways to chip in and help out Believe in Tomorrow Children’s Foundation, with one opportunity this weekend in Fenwick. This is the 4th year for the Annual 5k Beach Race, and with a stellar weather forecast in the bag, its shaping up to be the perfect day for a 5k. Runners and walkers will participate either as a team, individually or as part of the human centipede as they walk or run through the Bayside Community Resort and Golf Course. Following the race is a post-race party and awards ceremony at The Freeman Stage.
“We currently have just over 300 people registered (already higher than last year’s numbers) and anticipate at least another 50-100 to register on race day, depending on the weather,” explained Special Events Associate Kate Sachs this week. “Last year we had about 150 register on race day and it was a gorgeous day, so we could perhaps get closer to the 500-range for participants! This is very exciting for us, as we are only in our 4th year of holding the race.”
While pre-registration ended yesterday, race day registration is still available up until the actual race. Registration is $35 for all registrants. There is also the option for virtual runner registration for those that can’t make the race but want to show their support. Virtual runner’s registration costs $35 and all virtual runners will be mailed a shirt after the race.
After much success, the Centipede Division is back for its third year and is open to all those who are up for the creative challenge. Run or walk the entire race connected to your team to form a human centipede. Dress up your centipede with a unique costume and get creative! Requirements for the centipede division are as follows – each person must register individually, each centipede must be comprised of 4 to 15 connected individuals with the option of one unconnected “floater,” there must be at least four feet of space between each connected person with the connecting material allowing for members to easily disconnect and reconnect during the race if needed, and last but not least, all centipedes are encouraged to get creative. Awards will be presented to each centipede for creativity, as well as Fastest Centipede and Highest Fundraising Centipede.
Prizes and awards will also be available for fundraising efforts so set your goals high. Overall top male/female will receive medals and prizes, awards will also be presented to the Highest Fundraising Team, the Largest Team and the Top Individual Fundraiser.
Following the race, participants, families and friends will gather at The Freeman Stage for a post-race party. Saturday is shaping up to be a beautiful last day of summer, so head to Bethany and support a truly amazing cause – Believe In Tomorrow.
2nd Annual Bethany Beach Triathlon & Duathlon
Sunday offers up another great opportunity to support your local community, at the Bethany Beach First Responders hold their 2nd Annual Beach Triathlon and Duathlon. This Sunday, September 22, racers will gather and put their endurance to the test, all for to help benefit the Bethany Beach Volunteer Fire Company and First Responders. The event will feature a 1000 meter Swim/Beach Run(.62 miles), 30k Bike (18.5 miles), and 7k Run(4.35 miles). The course takes you along Bethany’s beautiful coast and beaches, exposing you to the scenic areas of Coastal Delaware and the towns along the coastline. Race begins at 7:30 am. Even if you aren’t up for the race (because let’s be honest, it’s slightly daunting) come out and cheer the racers on and show some support to the Bethany Beach Volunteer Fire Company and First Responders.
Mid-Atlantic Symphony Orchestra Season Premier –October 12, 7:30 to 10pm
As we enter a new season, there is perhaps no more fitting way to celebrate than with the season premiere of the Mid-Atlantic Symphony’s “A Season of Discovery.” The season premiere concert, titled “Great Masterworks,” will feature Music Director Julien Benichou and Guest Violinist Arnaud Sussman. Musical selections include Tchaikovsky: Violin Concerto in D Major, Op. 35; Schubert: Symphony No. 9 in C Major, D. 944. A pre-concert lecture will be held at 6:45pm.
