This is the time of year that we need to give our skin special attention. We have two major factors working against us in the cold winter months that can severely dehydrate our skin.

1) The lack of humidity and cold weather plays a huge role. Protect your skin daily with a nourishing moisturizer with SPF. Yes, even in the winter months you will need to protect your skin from the UV rays. I personally like Dynamic Skin Moisturizer by Dermalogica with SPF 30.You can get sun damage year round because the rays are still coming through glass and clouds. Those unwanted spots and freckles are not age spots, they are sunspots from UV exposure, and so you also want to put SPF on the top of your hands as well. Think of your skin as functioning like a grape; when it is nourished and protected it is plump and smooth. When dehydrated your skin will look like a raisin…dry and wrinkled.

2) Indoor heat is another big factor. A humidifier in your home and bedroom is especially helpful. With lack of humidity our skin and sinus issues become more of a problem. Also drink plenty of fluids to keep hydrated. Chicken soup is not only good for your soul but the broth based soups (not cream), with vegetables are loaded with anti-oxidants that are good for your skin and immune system.

Suggestions for great skin:

Get a facial monthly. I can determine which products are good for your skin type. A facial will not only relax you but has many benefits such as giving you a renewed glow, and rebalancing and rehydrating on the cellular level were it counts. It also smoothes fine lines and deeper wrinkles so you can improve the appearance in just one visit. It is equally important to use the right products. Water based moisturizers are not what you want to use in the winter, and if skin feels tight after washing it you are using the wrong cleanser; it is striping your natural oils from your skin. I give free skin consultations and sample products to anyone who is uncertain about what is best for their individual needs.

I suggest using a concentrated hydrating serum under your skin moisturizer in the cooler months, day and night. Pevonia makes a Vitaminic Concentrate that is great for even the most sensitive skin types. When your skin is dry it becomes more sensitive to weather, indoor heat, certain foods and even alcohol. Oh – and speaking of alcohol, that is a big skin dehydrator so give your skin special attention if you plan to be whooping it up at holiday parties. A dry skin mask (not clay) can do wonders to plump your skin back up with moisture. I like the Dermalogica Multi-Vitamin Anti- Aging Mask. Do this at least once or twice a week. You can even sleep with a thin layer on your skin. You can whip up an all-natural mask from your kitchen with a mashed Avocado. It’s very hydrating on your face or even for your hair. Add yogurt to make a little more of a paste-like consistency; alone yogurt is also good for your skin if you don’t have an Avocado.

Lucky Girl Bath & Beauty by Christy Stone TralaExfoliate regularly. I prefer stronger exfoliants rather than scrubs because they are more anti-aging. I like lactic acid (from milk) glycolic acid (from sugar) or Retinols (from Vitamin A). These ingredients have smaller molecules to penetrate your skin so it can repair where it counts. When you get rid of the build up of dead cells, moisturizers are more easily absorbed. A renewing glow, smoother skin, and an increase in collagen and elasticity are the benefits to using these exfoliants. Make an appointment with me to determine which is best for your skin type.
