Shop MD Tax Free Week
When: August 9-15
What: It’s time for back to school shopping, and what better way to hit the stores than during tax-free week! Through Saturday, enjoy tax-free purchases of qualifying clothing or footwear priced at $100 or less. It’s the second largest shopping season of the year so why not save a few bucks in the process…and treat yourself while you’re at it!
Captain Steve Harman’s Poor Girls Open
When: August 13-15
Where: Bahia Marina, OCMD
What: The annual Poor Girls Open returns to OCMD this week, as the ladies-only billfish release tournament hits the local waters. The tournament was started by Captain Steve Harman as a way for local waitresses and bartenders to have a friendly competition while raising money for breast cancer research. It’s a locals favorite that has grown tremendously over the years, with over 100 boats entering. For non-participants, there are silent auctions, 50/50 tickets, t-shirts for sale, and more. In the past three years alone, the tournament has brought in over $100,000 for the American Cancer Society.
50th Anniversary of Assateague State Park
When: Friday, August 14, 11am-1pm
Where: Assateague State Park
What: Join representatives from the National Aquarium, Assateague People of Delmarva, Rackliffe House, Harriet Tubman State Park, and Coastal Stewards this Friday as they celebrate 50 years of memories at Assateague State Park. Exhibits, games, photo displays, live animals and vintage craft booths are just a few of the items on the agenda, along with featured guests like Governor Larry Hogan. The event is free to the public, with the exception of regular parking fees.
Miss & Mr. Peach Pageant
When: Friday, August 14, 6-7pm
Where: Porch at the Atlantic Hotel
What: The 6th Annual Miss and Mr. Peach Pageant will coincide with the 2nd Friday Art Stroll, providing an adorable backdrop for the town’s monthly art walk. Contestants must be 4-7 years of age and reside in Worcester County. Contestants will be judged on poise, personality and stage presence. The pageant will take place on the porch of the Atlantic Hotel so come out and show these little stars some support!
Wicomico County Fair
When: August 14-16 (Friday: 2-9pm; Saturday: 10am-9pm; Sunday: noon-4pm)
Where: Winterplace Park, Salisbury, MD
What: Originally established in 1936, the Wicomico County Fair returns this year after the decision was made to combine the traditions of the Wicomico Home and Farm Show with the Chicken Festival. Expect three days of kids’ games, home arts, animals, auctions, entertainment and competitions. For more details, click here.
2nd Friday Art Stroll
When: Friday, August 14
Where: Historic Downtown Berlin
What: It’s that time again…time for the 2nd Friday Art Stroll in Berlin! 2nd Friday Art Strolls afford visitors and locals with the chance to enjoy the shops a little later than normal, along with guest artists, specials, and activities, like the DIY Terrarium Party at Bungalow Love starting at 5pm. Also on tap this weekend in Berlin is the Summer Sidewalk Sale. Expect sales Friday and Saturday from some of your favorite Berlin businesses including Victorian Charm, Sea La Vie, Town Center Antiques, World of Toys, The Atlantic Hotel, Inca Ruins, The Globe and the Maryland Wine Bar.
OC Beach Ultimate Classic Frisbee Tournament
When: Saturday, August 15 & Sunday, August 16, 9am-5pm
Where: Beach at Somerset Street in OCMD
What: The OC Beach Ultimate Classic Frisbee Tournament returns this weekend, with two full days of ultimate Frisbee fun, including Elite and Open divisions for over 30 teams. Set up your chairs along the beach and enjoy the excitement while soaking up the sun. Stick around Saturday evening for the showcase game at 6pm.
